Course Description

Essential Skills of Leadership focuses on the essential Skills needed by leaders at every level to develop commitment-driven performance and ensure the achievement of superior results.
First, managers and leaders will become aware of the need to support and maintain team members' self-respect and dignity and will learn different ways of doing this effectively in all management situations.
Second, learners will distinguish between behaviour and attitude and will learn how to focus on behaviour rather than attitudes or personal characteristics. In order to develop participative management relations, and implement constructive performance management, team members need to believe that they are evaluated and appraised fairly and without bias. These skills will enable team leaders and managers to evaluate and praise behaviour and performance in a way that is understandable and acceptable to team members, and that complies with labour legislation.
One of the objectives of the learning is to create a culture of trust and participation (which together form the basis for effective management and empowerment of people). Many aspects of team leader/team member relations influence this, one of which is motivation. In Essential skills of Leadership, leaders will examine their own perceptions with regard to motivation and participation, and start to identify the links between motivation, participation, communication and commitment. In line with this, the third skill developed focuses on encouraging team member participation.
Finally, listening skills are emphasised with a specific focus: using listening as a motivational tool. Actively listening to team members enables team leaders to engineer motivation for more effective and productive performance. It will also enable them to start to develop individual accountability at all levels by helping people to manage and motivate themselves on an ongoing basis.

The skills developed in Essential Skills of Leadership form the foundation for developing harmonious and productive relations with team members based on mutual respect and trust, thereby setting the tone for commitment-driven performance and results.
