The voice is the most accessible instrument of human expression and communication. It is a vehicle through which each individual can give form to different identities; emotionally, artistically, and intellectually. The voice is not only a tool of speech and song, but also the source of a multitude of other expressions – sounds and suggestions ranging from the beautifully pure bel canto to the most primitive and strange, from width into depth.
Working with the voice is both a pragmatic and imagined work which often helps to break restricting patterns bringing life and vitality to a person.
PROGRAM FOR DAY 1
DO YOU REALLY KNOW YOUR BODY?
To know one-self is to look with wisdom at oneself
VITAL COMPONENTS OF YOUR BODY/INSTRUMENT
1. Your diaphragm
2. Your brain
3. Your heart
4. Your voice
DEEP RELAXATION - It all starts with correct breathing and deep relaxation!
Breathing is the most valuable and significant element in life. Exhalation controls the quality of the sound you will produce, the volume, the pitch and the tone, whilst inhalation dominates how you exhale. Most people inhale into their upper lungs i.e., their shoulders go up as does their chest. With air only in your upper lungs, you do not have the control you need. Anybody who wants to be healthy should also fill their lower lungs, and thus make use of diaphragm breathing or belly breathing. This gives you complete physical and emotional control and constantly fills you with energy.
1. The technique of correct breathing
2. Anatomy of the diaphragm
3. Effect of correct breathing on the brain
4. Various breathing exercises
5. The voice-box and various important exercises
AWARENESS OF YOUR BODY/INSTRUMENT
1. Becoming aware of the body through narrative pantomime
2. Becoming aware of somebody else through narrative pantomime
3. Becoming aware of the ways in which our bodies move
4. Becoming aware of the things that influences moving
5. Experiencing and acting out of emotions on an outer level
MAKING YOUR BODY/INSTRUMENT MORE POWERFUL
1. Exercises to improve concentration and focus
2. Exercises to improve creativity
3. Exercises to improve interaction with others
ALLOWING YOUR VOICE TO HEAL YOU
The fact that some sounds can produce physical and emotional effects is quite astounding.
The idea of sound is rather amazing. Something happens here and you know it is here, even when you are not paying any attention to it, or even when you are asleep.
ANATOMY OF THE LARYNX OR VOICE BOX
1. Production of airflow
2. Sound production and resonance
USING YOUR VOICE TO BECOME A POWERFUL PERFORMER
The body uses muscles in order to achieve movement related to the world around it, in the same way the soul uses the voice in order to communicate, and to connect to other people and to move them emotionally in numerous ways.
Health (both physical and emotional) is a desirable commodity much sort after today, more today than ever before in history. This could be due to the fact that people are slowly becoming more conscious of what awareness is and therefore what health is in its most complete sense.
What is the relationship between voice and feelings? I quote the belief of Paul and Clara Silber1: “The problem today is that the voice has become detached from the words we speak. Words are a somewhat modern invention. First came feeling and instincts expressed in sound. Before we could say "I feel pain" there was only the sound of pain. Before we could say "I love you" there was only the sound of the love you felt. Our modern speech deals with concepts and ideas and is devoid of feeling and body. The personified voice is one that links the conceptualisation and cerebralisation of the head with the guts and emotions of the body in such a way that there are no surprises. The body is not cut off from its means of communication on a speaking level, and the head keeps its channels open to primary feeling centres”.
VOCAL EXERCISES – the actual reason for this workshop
BODY MUSIC – music your body produces that can produce emotional balance
MUSICAL AWAKENING OF THE SOUL – Music that aids in emotional balance. (The second movement (Andante) of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 21 in C, K467 “Elvira Madigan” will be employed for this exercise).
EXPERIENCING AND ACTING OUT OF EMOTIONS on an inner level.
I think you will agree, that emotional problems are almost always caused by the failure of the performer(or any person for that matter) to relate satisfactorily to his own feelings, his own emotions.
Throughout the year
We have this workshop throughout the year, candidates need to send an email for possible dates.
